Star Trek Comics Soar Again At IDW
Posted by: comicsuncovered - 10-09-2006, 07:23 PM - Forum: Hot Off The Presses... - Replies (1)

<p><i>Official Press Release </i></p>
<p>San Diego, CA —It's not a rift in the space/time continuum—<a href="http://idwpublishing.com/" target="_blank">IDW Publishing</a> is pleased to announce the return of <i>Star Trek </i> to the realm of comic books. The legendary science fiction franchise that's spanned six television series, ten motion pictures, and hundreds of novels, celebrates its 40th anniversary by naming IDW Publishing as the source for all-new <i>Star Trek </i> comic book voyages. </p>
<p>IDW's plans for the <i>Star Trek </i> franchise in comics are far-reaching, and will unfold over the next few months. The first <i>Star Trek </i> miniseries will debut in January 2007, in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of <i>Star Trek: The Next Generation </i>®.   Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the <i>U.S.S. Enterprise </i>™ NCC-1701-D return with an all-new adventure that will span <i>The Next Generation </i> timeline. The six-issue miniseries, <i>Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Space Between </i>, begins by setting the scene during the first year of the <i>Enterprise- </i>D's mandated mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly going <i> “where no one has gone before </i>.” </p>
<p>At the helm of this first venture is writer David Tischman ( <i>Bite Club </i>), who is joined by artist Casey Maloney ( <i>Children of the Grave </i>). Artists Dennis Calero ( <i>X-Factor </i>) and Zach Howard ( <i>Shaun of the Dead </i>) will provide 50/50 covers for the first issue. </p>
<p>But that's just the beginning. IDW Publishing will be producing additional <i>Star Trek </i> titles with a new line of comic book projects in the rich tradition of 40 years of science fiction excellence. </p>
<p>“I couldn't be happier to be shepherding <i>Star Trek </i> comics in the 21 st century,” said IDW's Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall . “Not only is this one of the most storied franchises in all of entertainment, but its history in comics is a long one, too. And yet, despite the abundance of different <i>Star Trek </i> comics that have come along in the past, we've hit on some unique ways to bring new vibrancy and creativity to the line. I look forward to building on the legacy that stretches back to the Gold Key comics I read as a kid and moving the franchise forward into the future. Well, <i>further </i> into the future, that is. Can't wait to let the fans know more of what we have in mind.” </p>
<p>Star Trek The Next Generation: The Space Between issue #1 (of 6) debuts in January 2007. </p>

Marvel's Iron Man has found its Tony Stark!
Posted by: The Mighty Thor - 10-01-2006, 05:37 PM - Forum: Moving Pictures... - Replies (3)

From Ain't it Cool News---

Brace yourselves for what happens when someone makes the right choice for once.

Tony Stark will be played by Robert Downey, Jr.

I can’t even express how much I love that choice. First of all, congratulations to Paramount and Marvel for having the nerve to pin their franchise on Downey. He’s had some rough years, but if I’ve ever seen anyone aggressively work to rehab their career, it’s Downey. Even in his darkest days, he was doing good work, but lately he seems more in touch than ever with what makes him great as a performer. He’s excellent with comedy, and he can break an audience’s heart with ease. Rare combination.

And when the franchise finally gets into some of Tony Stark’s darkest hours, when he faces down his own demons in the second film or the third, can you imagine how much soul Downey can bring to it? If handled right, that’s some of the most potent dramatic material in any Marvel movie, and now they’ve got the right actor to make it all work.

Congratulation, Favreau and Paramount and Marvel.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I love this casting. He is the perfect sort of quirky non-mainstream choice for this role. On the whole I don't believe the average movie viewer will know who Iron man is, but with just a touch of luck, Downey will capture the role perfectly and then audiences everywhere will know this classic character. And maybe it'll help to revitalize his acting career a bit in the process. Fingers crossed big time for the success of this project.

  52 Pick-Up
Posted by: GlennWalker - 09-30-2006, 04:59 AM - Forum: The Daily Planet... - Replies (2)

So, who here is picking up 52? Gor those out of the know, 52 is the weekly DC series designed to let readers know what happened in the mysterious year between Infinite Crisis and all the regular DCU books that began 'one year later,' the year that Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman took their hiatuses.

We're twenty-one weeks in this week. Catch up here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.dccomics.com/sites/52/">http://www.dccomics.com/sites/52/</a><!-- m -->

Of the highlights, we've seen the reintroduction of Isis into the DC Universe, even though it's into the arms of Black Adam. Ralph Dibny has been exploring ways to return his wife to life via a cult based on Superboy and communicating with Doctor Fate's helmet. Adam Strange has returned to his Silver Age personality and resourcefulness even blinded. An excellent Clark Kent scene where he's saved by new metropolis hero Supernova. And Booster Gold returned to his original glory that seems to only be known to the three of four people who actually read the original Dan Jurgens title.

Low lights of 52: Death and downfall of that ill-remembered Booster Gold, the introduction of the new 'lipstick lesbian' Batwoman, an uninteresting Question that resembles neither the Steve Ditko, Denny O'Neil nor animated versions of the character (my lord, how do you make the Question boring???), a snoozer of a Luthor scheme (old baldy just can't paln without the S-man around), Lobo as a religious leader, and a disappointing subplot involving Steel and his niece.

We have a mystery or two: Who is Supernova? Is it Booster Gold? Superboy? A Superman robot? The original Supernova? Brother Power? And the biggie, what does 52 really mean?

Thoughts? Or am I the only one reading this series?

I've seen it already. My review is posted here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.comicwidows.com/killtv/index.php?link=0029">http://www.comicwidows.com/killtv/index.php?link=0029</a><!-- m --> I really do think this is the best interpretation so far of a drama where folks have super-powers. Better than Unbreakable, and better than any straight superhero flick, and that's saying a lot coming from me. It starts tonight. I'm dying to know what you folks think of it.
