Variant Covers - Local Hero - 04-23-2004

Given DC's recent penchant for releasing variant covers and Marvel about to do the same for Astonishing X-Men, where do you stand on the subject? Is it a blatant attempt to rip a few extra bucks out of the customer or is it a chance for collectors to get a more exclusive version of an issue?

Personally, I view it as an opportunity to get a cover by an artist that I like better than the other(s). Sometimes It's all done by the same artist, but offers up different characters. I like variety, and no one said you had to buy all of them!

Transformers and Thundercats were good for this until I realized that I DIDN'T have to relive my childhood.
