Marvel: Excalibur #2 - Compare & Contrast
#1
Posted 06/07/2004
Source Newsarama

As he did with issue #1, former/original penciler of Excalibur, Igor Kordey has placed his penciled pages from the just released issue #2 of the series, which he had completed prior to being fired from the series.

Newsarama has posted a sequence from the issue (by current penciler Aaron Lopresti) – pages 4-8, which show the new Ernie and Bert of the X-Universe, Professor Xavier and (the recently discovered to be alive) Magneto discussing philosophies and recent events, while preparing dinner. Domestic bliss, mutant style.

I know Lopresti isn't everyone's cup of tea, but seeing these images side by side, I can't help but think Korday's look very rushed and definitely lack the dynamism and interest of Lopresti's layouts. Lopresti has managed to give some interest to what is effectively five pages of talky talk. Personally I think Mr Korday should have kept his pencils to himself, because he has really done himself no favours by showing them in this state, perhaps inked and colored they might acquit themselves better against Lopresti's finished pages but no amount of work by inker and colorist can fix bad layouts i'm afraid.

He's a no talent hack with a big mouth. Plain and simple.

I've lost all respect for him after his bashfest against his former employer because of his dismissal, and frankly, if that's the kind of work he's turning out, he deserved it!

It really isn't fair to compare finished pages to rough pencils. But I agree that Mr. Kordey's layouts aren't anything to write home about. I'm not a huge Aaron Lopresti fan either, but I definately prefer his style to Kordey's. It at least fits in with the "super-hero in spandex" angle that Marvel is trying to return its characters to.

Kordey is fine for what he does, but what he does is not super heroes. Not in my opinion at least.
