  No more Marvel at Marvel?
Posted by: Local Hero - 03-24-2004, 01:43 PM - Forum: Hells Kitchen... - Replies (6)

Taken from ComicsContinuum 23/03/2004.

It looks like Captain Marvel #25 will be the final issue of the Marvel series. I haven't picked up the current run of this character but have flicked through a few issues while in the comic shop and found what I had seen so far interesting enough to considering buying the trades that have been released. Looks like perhaps Marvel are looking at the comic sales and figuring that the book might not be as popular as say an x-man title. Which is a shame, because I have always liked Marvel's diversity of characters.

  Green Arrow

Ok, I've been reading Green Arrow from Issue #1 *which I got a some sweet ass autographs on too!* and while the artwork took a bit to win me over, I'm a huge fan of it now. It's just that Phil Hester has a different style than most people, and after you get used to it, they change artists, you find yourself wanting Phil to come back. Which, did happen to me.

So, Judd Winnick is writing the book now...and it's actually better than Kevin Smith's run on it. While Kevin did a top notch job, I think he had too many forks in the fire at the time he was writing it. *coughspidermanblackcatcough*

But, for the money, Green Arrow is probably my favorite DC book right now.
The current Riddler story is wonderful, just filled with laughs. Which, me, that's why I buy comics, to make me laugh.

  Comicology: Artist Interviews

In our continuing effort to bring you art from a different perspective while I was browsing a short time ago I came across Comicology, a four issue magazine discussing comics. The thing that really grabbed me was the interviews and art with some great comic creators. Here are some links to those interviews.

  Marvel: Ultimates Cancelled?

Marvel Comics announced in a press release Monday evening that they've cancelled their chronically late title "The Ultimates." That doesn't mean it's gone for good, though. The popular title has suffered from numerous publishing delays, so Marvel's decided to cease publication following issue #13, out this month, but will relaunch the title at a later date once six issues of the series are completed so as to get the title back on a monthly schedule. The full press release follows:

Creating the Ultimate(s) Experience

Marvel & the creators behind the best-selling Ultimates series have refocused and retooled the first issue of ULTIMATES VOLUME 2, #1 to make it bigger, badder, bolder and, most importantly, regular! To accomplish these goals, the brash series has been removed from the schedule, with all original orders cancelled. The blockbuster title will be resolicited at a later date, when it can be guaranteed to ship monthly. "Marvel did exactly what we wanted them to. Like everyone else, I've been frustrated by the long delays between issues and so I asked them to stockpile six issues to guarantee this book went out monthly again," said Mark Millar. " Volume two is very much a sequel and so this seems like the logical place to have the gap. I'd rather see delays between volumes than issues and it's great Marvel's getting behind us like this."

Offered artist Bryan Hitch, "With Marvel's continued and unprecedented support, they are allowing us to step back and stockpile a whole arc before release which is just fantastic. That's not to say we are resting on our laurels here, we have realistic, workable schedules and are 100% committed to giving the fans the best we can, every single month!" Marvel staff has been supportive of the creators and their unprecedented stance. As Publisher Dan Buckley said, "Look, this title is a home run whenever it comes out. But it's got to come out for six months in a row - a complete story, shipping on time. By working together, we now feel comfortable saying we're giving the fans the best possible reading experience."

Marvel Editor in Chief, Joe Quesada, offered, "Timing aside, just wait 'til you see what these guys have cooking. The book will look amazing if this comes off as planned, and you can absolutely believe we're going to want to get this into the hands of the fans as soon as possible, because I want the book myself!" Ultimates-obsessed fans may find solace in the following Ultimates Collected Editions:

ULTIMATES VOLUME 1: SUPER-HUMAN
ULTIMATES VOLUME 2: HOMELAND SECURITY
ULTIMATES VOLUME 1 HARDCOVER

  Gen13....Better Than I Hoped For
Posted by: The Truth - 03-24-2004, 01:48 AM - Forum: The Daily Planet... - Replies (3)

Wow. I mean.....wow. Don't get me wrong....when I first heard of Gen13's cancellation and subsequent relaunch I was concerned they were going to do to this book what they did to Wildcats and run it into the ground with unneeded revamps and relaunches and volumes.

Boy was I wrong.

Now then...I'm not sure how many of you out there are picking this book up....but if you're not you really should be. Granted the original cast is almost completely gone (or are they?), but the new group has such a great dynamic and the story behind their powers is so expansive that the entire Gen13 world feels different, and yet is completely the same.

True, I was a bit put off at first that the story has been moved to New York, but after coming into contact with the characters all I can say is good move. The characters feel much more varied now than they did in the last book, even though just like those that came before them, this group has one common thread that links them all.

Now...I'm not going to talk to much about what they've done or the basic story in case someone comes along and wants to be surprised for themselves when they pick up back issues, but I will say I have yet to be disappointed with a single issue or single panel or cover. The art and story direction is superb and they way they reinvented the wheel that was Gen13 without completely throwing away all the things that made Gen13 great is....well....Great.

I highly reccomend this book.

But that's just me? How do the rest of you feel about this title? Seriously...I'm dying to hear other people's takes on it good, bad, or indifferent.

  Batgirl: Pencillled Issue
Posted by: Local Hero - 03-23-2004, 02:51 PM - Forum: The Ink & Paint Club... - Replies (2)

Here is something totally cool. Being a total sucker for pencil art this grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it. I truly love the full color glory that is comics but it is only when you see the pencil work that you can really appreciate the nuances of the artist. Of course you will have seen some pencil work on websites, sketches, samples but sldom do you get a chance to see a WHOLE ISSUE the way the penciller drew it. ( Plus some bonus like reworked pages). I hope you'll enjoy looking at this pages as much as I did. So for those interested in seeing the magic behind the page here is a chance too look at an entire issue's worth of pencils.   Marvel's new X-Force
Posted by: The Mighty Thor - 03-23-2004, 01:22 AM - Forum: Stan's Soapbox... - Replies (5)

If you have no idea what this rant is about to address...go read the press release in the "Hot Off the Presses" forum... http://www.comicsuncovered.com/phpBB2/vi...c.php?t=76

Ok, so just when I thought Marvel was pulling itself out of the mediocrity, they make an announcement that will have many fans circling with their torches. Marvel Comics, under the direction of EIC Joe Quesada, is going to be releasing a new X-Force series. Which, in itself would have me jumping for joy. And Fabian Nicieza is writing it. More jumping. And Rob Liefeld is drawing it...what?! How can that be? I have never met one fan in my almost twenty years of comic collecting that appreciates, or even almost likes, Rob Liefeld's artwork.

Now I will admit, I have not spoken with every comic book fan on the planet personally, so I do not know if Liefeld does indeed have fans out there. It is possible. And if you are one of them, or if you are Rob Liefeld, I will appologize up front, but I think the guy has a big fat goose egg in the talent column.

He draws characters horribly out of proportion, even when they are in the simplest of poses. He is incapable of drawing a character looking anything but pissed off. The only reason his artwork looks any better today than it did in 1991, is because the coloring techniques have grown by leaps and bounds. A colorist can not be sadled with the responsibility of making an artist better than he truly is. You can paint a turd the prettiest shade of blue in the world, but you can not hide the simple fact that it is still a turd.
